The PGTRB (Post Graduate Teacher Recruitment Board) Exam is conducted by the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB), Tamil Nadu, for the direct recruitment of:

  • Post Graduate Assistants (PG Teachers)

  • Physical Director Grade–I

  • Computer Instructor Grade–I

These roles are appointed in Government Higher Secondary Schools (Classes XI & XII) across Tamil Nadu.

The exam is highly competitive and requires strong conceptual command over the PG-level subject, teaching methodology, Tamil eligibility, and general knowledge.

Eligibility Criteria (General)

As per TRB guidelines:

Educational Qualification

  • A Postgraduate Degree in the relevant subject with minimum 50% marks (recognized university).

  • B.Ed. (Bachelor of Education) from an NCTE-approved institution.

  • For Physical Director Grade–I: M.P.Ed. required instead of B.Ed.

  • UG & PG degrees should generally be in the same major subject.

Age Limit (Maximum)

  • General / Unreserved: 53 years

  • SC / ST / BC / BCM / MBC / DNC / DW: 58 years

PGTRB Exam Pattern

The recruitment process includes two stages:

Part A – Tamil Eligibility Test (Compulsory)

  • Type: Objective (OMR / CBT)

  • Questions: 30 MCQs

  • Marks: 50

  • Duration: 30 minutes

  • Qualifying Marks: 40% (20/50)

  • Nature: Qualifying only — marks are not added to final merit.

Passing Part A is mandatory for Part B evaluation.

Part B – Main Written Examination (Final Merit)

  • Total Marks: 150

  • Duration: 3 Hours

  • Type: Objective (MCQs)

PGTRB Syllabus

The Main Subject section evaluates postgraduate-level depth, conceptual mastery, and application skills.

The detailed syllabus varies by subject, but typically includes the following components:

Covers advanced PG-level theories, definitions, principles, and frameworks.

B. Applied Understanding

Application-based questions testing analytical and problem-solving skills.

Recent advancements, updated concepts, and current trends related to the subject.

D. Research & Pedagogical Insight (Implicit)

Questions indirectly test understanding of:

  • subject progression from lower classes

  • how concepts connect to higher secondary curriculum

  • Tamil: Sangam literature, grammar, modern poetry, history of Tamil language

This part tests professional teaching knowledge required for handling Higher Secondary classes (XI & XII).
