What is TNTET?

The TNTET (Tamil Nadu Teacher Eligibility Test) is a mandatory qualifying examination conducted by the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB), Tamil Nadu, for teaching positions in government and government-aided schools for Classes I to VIII.

Passing TNTET is compulsory for anyone aspiring to become:

  • Primary School Teacher (Classes I–V)

  • Upper Primary Teacher (Classes VI–VIII)

TNTET ensures that candidates possess the necessary teaching aptitude, conceptual understanding, and pedagogical skills required under the Right to Education (RTE) Act.

TNTET Exam Levels

TNTET consists of two papers, each targeting different teaching levels.

The exam follows a fully objective MCQ format, is OMR/CBT-based, and typically consists of 150 questions for 150 marks.

TNTET Eligibility Criteria (General)

As per standard TET norms

Eligibility for Paper I (Primary Teacher – Classes I–V)

  • 12th / Higher Secondary with 50% marks AND
  • D.El.Ed (2-year Diploma in Elementary Education) OR
  • B.El.Ed (4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education)

    Final-year candidates are also eligible.

Eligibility for Paper II (Upper Primary Teacher – Classes VI–VIII)

  • Graduation with 50% marks AND
  • B.Ed. (1 or 2-year)

    Final-year B.Ed. candidates may also apply.

Age Limit

  • TNTET generally has no upper age limit for applying.
  • Recruitment age limits (when actually joining) vary under TNTRB norms.

As per current guidelines, the TNTET certificate is valid for a lifetime, similar to CTET.
